Welcome to the web site of the EPS workshop on The Future of Physics and Society. The workshop will be held from March 4th to March 6th, 1999, at the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Debrecen, Hungary.

The focus of the workshop will be on (i) appreciation of physics/science in society. The future of physics/science as part of human culture and as key to the prosperity/survival of mankind; (ii) physics education in an era of disillusionment; (iii) the status of physics and physics education in Central and Eastern Europe.

The workshop is thematically related to the UNESCO-ICSU World Conference on Science to be held 26 June - 1 July 1999, Budapest, Hungary. The summary of the workshop will be submitted to the World Conference. No proceedings will be published. Submission of abstracts of up to 450 words (roughly one printed page) by e-mail is encouraged. There will only be plenary sessions with talks selected for presentation based on the abstracts.

The workshop is sponsored by UNESCO, EPS, OMFB (Hungarian National Committee for Technological Advancement), OTKA (Hungarian National Science Foundation), MTA (Hungarian Academy of Sciences), MALEV Hungarian Airlines.
